First Love at the web

When I first heard about Internet, I was in China.  First thing I knew about the web was that people could send email to each other, so they didn’t need to write to each other or call each other. Later my husband came to US, and at that time, I was more eager to access Internet, so that we two could contact each other using the Internet because the international telephone call was very expensive.

 Even though few people accessed the Internet, I decided to buy a modem using my whole salary of a month and then, I applied the account and did the configuration by myself. Finally, I sent an email to my husband.

On the next day, I was so excited when I received an email from my husband. This is my first experience with the web.

 The first web site I visited was the local web site where I lived. On the web, it provided the local news, weather and also chat rooms.  The site also connected with other local web sites in China. It was amazing that from the computer at home, we could go to everywhere we wanted. At the time, it was also very expensive to access the Internet in China, and the speed of connection was very slow.  I could not browse the Internet quite much and spend much time on it, but I did like it. I thought it was a new format for people to communicate with each other and also the outside world.

 At the same time, there were many web sites on the Internet. I felt that they all appeared overnight and I was wandering how web sites were made.
